About English study trips at St Giles International London Highgate

I chose St. Giles Highgate because the school isn’t located in the centre of London but up north in a much quieter neighbourhood. Downtown is easily accessible by metro in less than 20 minutes. The school is small and hence almost all the students know each other. Everyday, you can take part in the social programme organized by the school (movie night, salsa night, pub night…) and it’s a very good way to practice your English and make new friends. London is a beautiful city. Impossible to get bored, there is always something to do.

Since I am not used to big cities, I chose the London Highgate school in order to avoid the city centre! This London neighbourhood is really quiet, I feel safe and I often go running in the woods. My host family lives 25 minutes away by foot from the school, it’s perfect! I must admit that school was difficult during the first week but in order to integrate I had to make quick progress! The teachers have good learning methods; we speak a lot through game playing in English. In London, I recommend Oxford Street for shopping: you just need to take the Tube, London has good transport links!

After my apprenticeship, I couldn’t find a job, so I decided to combine something useful like learning a language with something pleasant like living abroad for a while. At London Highgate school, teachers are really nice and they speak in a way that is easy to understand, even with my low English level. In 2 weeks, I managed to pass a test and reach a higher level. In one month here, I learned much more than in my whole study carrier in Switzerland! I feel so confident now, that I even think in English sometimes! What I really appreciated about ESL, is that they sent me an email one week after my arrival. It’s kind of reassuring, especially if it’s your first experience! There is always something to do in London; the school is 20 minutes away from the centre, so London vibes are easily reachable. If you want to go out, I recommend Camden Town – it’s a hip and lively neighborhood where you can have fun during the day as well as at night!

I’ve enjoyed living in London because I have to be a little bit independent and it is good for me. I also like that everything is different: the culture, the food, the houses. It’s interesting. Next month I want to go to the Harry Potter museum, to see Big Ben and the London eye – that will be really exciting. I don’t really liked studying English in Switzerland, but here I really enjoy it because we study lots of different things. We don’t just study vocabulary, we also speak to each other in English all the time and read different things and watch interviews and video clips in English. I feel more confident now. When I arrived I was a beginner and now I am in the Intermediate class. I’m surprised and happy. My host family are nice people and I talk to them in English. I‘m happy there… but I miss my cats! The food is very different from Switzerland and what I eat at home. Sometimes I miss cooking because I really like cooking for my family.

St Giles Highgate is a very British place, green and beautiful. It’s the perfect location to learn English – the best, in my view. A great atmosphere combined with warm and open-minded teachers. My host family was lovely and welcomed me very well. It was an amazing experience!

My first idea was to refresh my English skills. I decided to validate my level with an exam and I registered for the FCE. I chose St Giles Highgate for it’s location – not too far from the city-centre – and because the school seemed very cosy. The preparation of the exam suits me very well; I am studying with younger students and this is very stimulating, it makes me improve faster. Teachers are caring and helpful. I am very happy about my choice!

London is the most beautiful city in the world! It never sleeps and it’s only a 1-hour flight from Germany! I lived in a student residence called Chester House, in the beautiful area of Musvell Hill – in North London. It’s considered a rich neighbourhood, as many celebrities live there. St Giles school is in Highgate, which is the North as well – it’s a 15-minutes bus ride from the residence. St Giles is a beautiful school, not too big, with an excellent organisation. Teachers are lovely and helpful. During the classes, we only spoke English – well, it’s the purpose of all this, isn’t it? We did many exercises, like discussions or fun activities. I met plenty of really nice people from all over the world. I left the school a long time ago, but this is definitely the best experience I’ve ever had!

The St. Giles school in Highgate is well located: in a residential district, close to the town centre. It is very convenient and life is less stressful, more relaxed. The classrooms are not large but some of them are equipped with interactive whiteboards, which is a great teaching tool. The school also organises many activities during the week and at weekends: karaoke, museum visits, pub evenings, to allow us to make friends quickly. I stay with a charming host family. They spend time with me and are very open-minded. My trip to London is a very good experience.
