Day 1 – Overberg, Whale Route, Cape Agulhas

Departing from LAL Cape Town at 8.30 am, the Garden Route adventure starts as you ride along the coastal whale route in Gordon’s Bay for a scenic drive over the panoramic R44 mountain pass with views panning across False Bay to the elegant, seaside town of Hermanus. After taking some snapshots and snacking down on a light lunch on the promenade, you move onto Birkenhead Brewery to taste some local ales brewed from the area before heading south to the tip of Africa at Cape Agulhas. This is the southernmost point of the vast African continent.

After seeing the views from the lookout point, you head to the harbour where you can join an exhilarating ski-boat cruise to search for some dolphins and whales in the open ocean (during season, June to November). You then take a leisurely stroll towards the accommodation along the longest beach in the Southern Hemisphere, “Die Plaat”. This day is perfect to relax and get to know the rest of your group, while becoming accustomed to life on tour.

Day 2 – Cape Agulhas to Sedgefield

After a relaxing breakfast you start driving inland again, this time towards the famed Garden Route! Your first stop is a once in a lifetime experience: walking with lions! This informative walk allows you to get some amazing photos while getting up close and personal with these amazing creatures.

Next on the agenda is a beautiful canoe trip down one of the many tranquil rivers in the area, followed by a short hike to one of the many stunning waterfalls there. Finish off the day with some beach time down at Myoli Beach.

Day 3 – Oudtshoorn day trip

You begin the day with a drive over the picturesque Outeniqua mountain range into the semi-desert region of the Klein Karoo and Oudtshoorn. Known as the ostrich capital of the world, Oudtshoorn is situated in a beautiful valley between the Outeniqua and Swartberg Mountains, and offers the wildlife and adventure enthusiast loads to choose from.

The Cango Caves will be the first stop and here you’ll embark on a 1-hour guided tour of the cave system to view its massive caverns and a wonderland of stalactite and stalagmite formations, millions of years old. Cango Caves is a world heritage site and one of the great wonders of the natural world. If you don’t mind trying to squeeze through some smaller gaps then you are also welcome to take the 1.5 hour adventure tour!

Next is an option to view and ride ostriches on a working ostrich farm or go on a guided tour of the Cango Endangered Wildlife Ranch for an opportunity to pet cheetah, cage dive with crocodiles and view many rare and endangered animal species.

Day 4 – Tsistikamma, Bloukrans Bridge, Sundays River Valley

This morning, you will explore the lush Tsitsikamma National Park, either via a hike across the suspension bridge at Storms River Mouth or by blackwater tubing. Tubing is a unique, four-hour fun adventure, filled with splashing, swimming, rock jumping, kloofing and hiking (seasonal). This national park is made up of a marine reserve consisting of 80km of pristine coastline filled with sea life and has beautiful forests and landscape. A third of the park is covered in fynbos, a unique flora indigenous to the Western Cape region, which flowers amongst the forest bush. The protea ranks amongst its most beautiful flowers.

In the afternoon you drive to the highest road bridge in Africa at Bloukrans Bridge. At a dizzying height of 216m, this is the highest commercial bungee jumping site in the world! Face your fears and take the jump!

You then move on to the Addo Elephant National Park and your accommodation for the night in the Sundays River Valley. Set in a wild and scenic location on the banks of the Sundays River, you take the time to relax under the shining African sun and explore the river by canoe. Sharing stories around the campfire underneath the starlit sky, this is what you’ve come to experience: you and the nature, Wild Africa at her enigmatic best.

Day 5 – Addo National Park, Jeffrey’s Bay

At sunrise, you start your Addo Park Safari along a network of winding roads, always stopping for memorable photos and interesting information on the variety of wild animals which you cross along your route. This malaria-free park stretches all the way to the Indian Ocean and is inhabited by the densest African Elephant population in the world, totalling more than 500 of these huge creatures.

During your game drive, you will get off the vehicle at the main lookout point for a panoramic view over the uncontained wilderness that is Addo. You’ll then take lunch at the park restaurant.

A major sea port and tourist destination, Port Elizabeth is set along the sandy shores of Algoa Bay and is the capital of the Eastern Cape region. You continue south towards the surfers’ paradise of Jeffery’s Bay, renowned the world over as one of the best surfing spots on the planet and home to numerous international surfing competitions. You will take time out to dip into the warm Indian Ocean and catch the waves at “Supertubes” before bargain-hunting at the town’s many surf wear outlet stores for amazing deals on international brands. Experienced surfers may rent a board to ride some waves, J’ Bay being particularly famous for the long barrels which its waves produce, while beginners can learn how to surf from qualified instructors.

Day 6 – The Crags Elephant Sanctuary, Monkeyland, Sedgefield

You begin the relaxing journey back to Cape Town with a first stop at the Crags Orphaned Elephant Sanctuary for a truly wonderful close encounter experience. Here you have an opportunity to walk, feed and ride an African elephant while receiving instruction from a knowledgeable African guide. If you have had enough of elephants after Addo, you have the option of exploring Monkeyland, a sanctuary with free roaming monkeys or Birds of Eden, a bird lover’s paradise!
Next you head on to the town of Knysna, undoubtedly one of South Africa’s most beautiful towns, for a stop at the Knysna Heads and a quick walkabout town. You arrive at your accommodation overlooking the ocean at Myoli Beach in Sedgefield.

Day 7 – Return to Cape Town via Sir Lowry’s Pass

After your final breakfast overlooking the ocean in Sedgefield, you start your journey back to Cape Town, re-visiting all the memories over the last week with your travel buddies. You visit an Aloe factory in Albertinia and relax during the slow drive back via Swellendam and Sir Lowry’s Pass. You arrive at LAL on Sunday afternoon.
