Choice of courses - A-Level revision courses

All the language courses we offer at ESL are beneficial for students studying for AS and A2 level exams, however, we have selected 4 schools which offer the ideal language learning environment for young people aged 15-18, who may be travelling alone for the first time. These locations are small, but still offer a good range of activities for a week or two, and the schools have a “family” atmosphere ensuring that students are taken care of during their stay. In addition the staff and teachers at the schools are very experienced in providing courses for this age group.

The combined course is ideal for students studying for AS/A2 levels or IB. Students will be encouraged to participate in class and primarily to develop their communicative language skills, but will also benefit from one-to-one tuition to focus intensively on areas which may require specific attention.

We offer language revision courses designed with AS/A2 level students in mind in the three most popular foreign languages at this level: French, German and Spanish; in four destinations:
  • Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva in French-speaking Switzerland
  • Freiburg in Germany’s Black Forest
  • Nerja on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, 1 hour from Malaga.
  • Rouen in lovely Normandy, only 1 hour 30 minutes from Paris.

The Course

The programme is open to all students in Years 10-13 aged over 15. Students will be assigned to a small group of approx. 10-12 participants (morning or afternoon timetable) and will focus on the 4 skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) as well as relevant vocabulary and grammar. These classes are run in open groups (min age 16) so not all students will be studying for AS/A2 or IB exams, however, as the course is based on the 4 skills, which is ideal to prepare for these exams. In addition, students will receive 1 hour of private tuition each day to focus either on skills specific to their exam, or on aspects of language they find challenging.

The exact timetable may vary slightly depending on the time of year, but most students will take group lessons between 9.00 and 13.00. They will receive 1 hour of individual tuition per day, according to the schedule organized by the centre.

Language immersion is by far the most effective way of improving skills in a foreign language. For this reason, communication will always be in the target language, in the classroom and throughout the school.

Modern Languages teachers will be interested to know that should they wish to bring a group from their school, we can provide special discounts, organise a bespoke timetable, a tailored activity programme, and free places for accompanying teachers.

Accommodation is provided with host families. We highly recommend staying with host families because this type of accommodation really brings the language and culture alive for students and allows them to experience a different way of life. We consider this an integral part of an unforgettable language travel experience. Host families take very good care of their young students and many keep in touch with the students they host for years. Families are usually located in walking distance of the school (which is not the case in bigger cities) and have usually known the owners of our partner schools for many years.
You will stay in a single room and receive half board meals (breakfast and main meal every day). Families can cater for special dietary requirements but it is important that you let us know about these in advance. Bed linen and bath towels are provided but you will need to bring your own towel. We suggest that you take some photos of your own family and your hometown as these can help you break the ice when you first meet your family.

NB: This course is designed for 15-18 year olds who have a certain level of independence and maturity. We recommend it for students who are serious about learning and are aiming to maximize their AS/A2 level language grades. The locations and partner schools we have chosen are ideal for providing language lessons suitable for the 15-18 age group, who are usually too old for a fully-supervised junior language programme. There will be older students in the group classes and activity programme, but this often means students are positively challenged by the pace of learning and make very rapid progress and achieve a higher grade than predicted in their exams. The one-to-one lessons in the afternoon are a key part of the programme and those students who boost their results are those who come to the individual lessons having prepared in advance which particular topics or language points they would like to focus on during their stay.
