If you’re in Munich in March, you had better try Starkbier – literally, strong beer! You can taste this freshly brewed, calorie-rich beer (it’s the equivalent to 1/3 of a loaf of bread) at breweries around the city, the most popular of which is the Paulaner Nockherberg brewery that also boasts the biggest party.

Who doesn’t love a carnival? The Theresienwiese fills up with all sorts of rides, attractions, beer tents, a flea market and fireworks. There’s a reason why locals call it Oktoberfest’s little sister!

To celebrate the official founding of Munich in the 12th century, the city celebrates with free concerts, markets, children’s activities and more, throughout the city centre.

21st September – 6th October 2019: Oktoberfest
Munich’s biggest bash actually starts in September, contrary to what its name might indicate. Parades, Bavarian brass bands, carnival rides and the tents along the Theresienwiese where waitresses in dirndls serve up giant bier steins and bretzels are all on the agenda at Oktoberfest.
27th November – 24th December 2019: Munich Christmas Markets
Just when you think Munich is as picturesque as it gets, come the Christmas markets. Clusters of Christmas stalls strung with twinkling lights pop up around the city, where you can browse wooden Christmas ornaments, sip on hot-spiced glühwein and get a bratwurst on the go. It’s impossible not to love its festive atmosphere!
