Language course in Berlin: Shopping

The city that styles itself as “poor but sexy” offers great, fashionable clothes at bargain-basement prices, with Kreuzkölln labelled the next big shopping destination (translation: target for the property developers). Head into one of the many galleries above rundown shops in Neukölln and find bargain prints to decorate your walls. Many of Berlin’s best shops lie down small alleys and in courtyards, so it pays to keep your eyes open and explore.
If you have a bit more cash to spend and have an itch that only expensive clothes can scratch, Kaufhaus des Westens (KaDeWe) has been dressing Berlin’s well-to-do for over a century. It is one of Europe’s largest department stores and has a famous food hall (possibly not the place to try a currywurst). For something younger, check out Flagshipstore on Oderbergerstrasse in Prenzlauer Berg. The space features 30 young independent designers so you’re bound to find something unique.
Prenzlauer Berg is the area for vintage clothes and the massive flea market at Mauerpark is a great place to spend a Sunday bargain hunting. At 3pm, Bearpit Karaoke (www.bearpitkaraoke.com/) starts up in the nearby amphitheatre. There are many smaller flea markets around Berlin Mitte.
Check out ten great things to do in Berlin for less than €20.
