How ESL is approaching the challenge of sustainable development
ESL – Language Travel has clearly positioned itself as a company that is committed to sustainable development. Each ethical practice within the company is thought of in terms of its global impact, which directly influences the day-to-day running of the business.

ESL’s commitment is more than environmental; we also care about the wellbeing of our staff. Furthermore, when we promote a product, we use all means to guarantee the best conditions to our business partners in the different destinations frequented by ESL students.

The need for action to support sustainable development is a guideline in ESL’s policy.
After becoming more aware of these problems, we have established our Sustainable Development Charter, which is just the first step in a long process that every organisation will eventually have to take.

We are implementing an action plan to promote the principles of sustainable development further into the core of our business and prepare ourselves to face the multiple global challenges, as well as a company policy. We also ensure that the partner schools where we send our students are dealing with the issues on a local level.
Can a company in the travel industry ever be “green”?
There is one question though, that needs to be answered: how can we be “green” and make students travel around the world at the same time? As travel and discovering new horizons is at the heart of our identity, we encourage train travel, when possible. But for long-distance journeys, getting on a plane is often the only possible option – so we have to face this conflict of interest.

However, there are multiple ways to compensate the negative effects of air travel.

Carbon Offsetting
We adopt voluntary compensatory measures against CO2 emissions and encourage our students to do the same. We equally undertake to support innovative initiatives in favour of the environment protection.

CSR (Corporate social responsibility)
We have undertaken a whole range of actions within our offices to reduce waste and encourage conscientious behaviour in all our international offices. These range from using renewable electricity suppliers to buying fair trade and local products.

Charitable and humanitarian causes
ESL actively supports multiple charities and humanitarian projects.
An efficient self-assessment tool
We developed a tool that helps our partner schools around the world to evaluate the degree of their current CSR responsibility. Thus, we hold a forerunner position in sustainable development among the study abroad industry players.
