The HSK scoring system was updated in 2010 but you will still often see reference to the old scoring system, which runs from 1 to 11. For example, a job advert may specify HSK7. Here are details of the old system:
HSK Elementary
C class 1 100-154 points
B class 2 155-209 points
A class 3* 210-300 points

*class 3: Level that must be obtained in order to sit for the HSK Primary/Secondary exams, as well as the HSK professional exams [business, tourism and secretarial]. It’s also the level required for students wanting to study at a Chinese university [scientific studies, engineering, agronomics and western medicine].
**class 6: Minimum level required by the Chinese Ministry of Education for foreign students wishing to study at a Chinese university [literary studies, traditional Chinese medicine].
***class 9: Criteria for applying for general employment that requires the Chinese language as a communication tool.
****class 11: Level required to be considered as an intermediate level translator.
