Official Exams and Certifications - French
The DELF and the DALF are official diplomas issued by the French Ministry for National Education to certify French language skills for foreign students. The DELF and the DALF are made up of 6 individual diplomas, corresponding to the 6 levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages:
DELF A1/A2: elementary
DELF B1/B2: intermediate
DALF C1/C2: advanced
DELF (Diplôme d'études en langue française)
The DELF is administered by the Centre international d'études pédagogiquesr (CIEP) for the French Ministry of Education. It is composed of four independent diplomas corresponding to the first four levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. The exams are offered approximately 10-12 times each year and cover reading, writing, listening and speaking.
DALF (Diplôme approfondi de langue française)
DALF is the continuation of DELF for the top two levels of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. In order to sit the DALF exams, candidates must either have passed the DELF, take a DALF access test or have passed ‘A’ level French.
The DALF C1 exam consists of four parts (reading, writing, speaking, listening) while the DALF C2 is split into two parts: a written assignment and a discussion with a jury.
A successfully completed DALF will satisfy the language entry requirements of French universities.
The exams can be taken in any of the 900 official exam centres in 154 countries. The DELF and DALF certificates take into account:
- international norms on exam content and structure (www.alte.org)
- harmonisation of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (www.coe.int)
TCF (Test de connaissance du français)
The TCF exam is administered by the Centre international d'études pédagogiques (CIEP) for the French Ministry of Education. The TCF exam provides students with a level from A1 (beginner) to C2 (near native), according to the Common European Framework of Reference for languages.
DELF B1/B2: intermediate
