Cambridge University’s CELTA – Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults – is probably the most popular and respected TEFL qualification. Internationally, the CELTA is an acknowledged seal of quality for English teachers and is externally assessed to ensure a high standard.
A full-time CELTA course runs for four to five weeks, during which you will spend at least six hours teaching a real class. There will be at least one trainer for every six students. The course is split into five core units of learning:
• Learners and teachers, and the teaching and learning context
• Planning and resources for different contexts
• Language skills: reading, listening, speaking and writing
• Language analysis and awareness
• Developing teaching skills and professionalism.
Typical entry requirements are a standard of education equivalent to that required for entry into higher education (although exceptions can be made) and a standard of English that will enable you to teach at a range of levels.
The course lasts 120 hours, including a minimum of 6 hours teaching to a real class. You are assessed throughout the course, with no final examination.
This is usually taken as an initial training course.
