Spa owes its international fame to its thermal sources, which have been appreciated for their health benefits since the Romans. From the 16th century onwards, people from all over the world looking to restore their health started to arrive in large numbers, making Spa a cultural centre where crowned heads would socialise. A black marble board, placed on the Pouhon Pierre le Grand, reminds us of the successful treatment, in 1717, of Russian Tsar Peter the Great, who was a great admirer of the place.
Since then, a lot of thermal water has flown into the pools of Spa, whose name is synonymous with luxurious bathing. Located at the foot of the Ardennes, the town has turned into a hotspot for lovers of music, museums, hiking and architecture. Its various baths have been revamped to welcome people looking for a rejuvenation treatment with Spa’s beneficial waters throughout the year. With its many shops, restaurants, markets and various attractions, times passes by very quickly – too quickly perhaps! You may want to attend a Formula 1 race at the famous circuit located close to the town – only to realise that the calm and serenity of this preserved area cannot be jeopardized by a few roaring engines. Spa is a great place to practise golf, horse riding, swimming or walk in the nearby parks and forests: a lovely programme for a language study trip rich in discoveries!
