How the Awards are decided
Awards are based on the feedback we receive from our students and staff.

When students return from their study abroad stay, we ask them to rate all aspects of their experience, including facilities, teaching quality, accommodation and leisure. Behind these questions are more specific ones in each category (for example location, common areas, classrooms and infrastructure all fall under 'facilities').

In most categories, the top ten schools are first ranked by student feedback, and then all ESL team members who work directly with schools rate them based on their own experiences. The scores are then combined to find a winner. (The questions we ask our team really boil down to “how does working with this school make it easier for you to serve clients?”)

Our team work daily with students and schools. The relationship involves not only product knowledge and know-how, but also logistics, availabilities and dealing with special requests. As well as caring for the needs of students and listening carefully to each customer’s goals, our team regularly visit schools, enabling them to give comprehensive feedback. All of this work allows us and our partner schools to deliver a personalised experience to each student.

The CSR Champion category is based on schools’ use of our CSR Self-Assessment tool. This online questionnaire allows partner schools to self-assess the degree of achievement in their CSR strategies. With our commitment to sharing CSR best practice in the field, we are uniquely placed to give this award. Schools which are members of groups are measured as a whole, as opposed to individual schools.

In some categories, only student feedback counts. For example, Teaching Programme of the Year and Leisure Programme of the Year. These are directly linked to students’ on-site experience.

Winning isn't everything...
But it matters. The awards are an opportunity to reward excellence and encourage all of our partner schools to keep pushing to provide the very best student experience. To see the top ten lists of runner-ups for each category, check out this blog post.

Winners of these awards can be proud of the fact they have been elected by the people who matter most of all.
ESL Certificate of Excellence
The ESL Certificate of Excellence is one way for you to know that a school offers students a first-class experience.

What is the ESL Certificate of Excellence?
The ESL Certificate of Excellence recognises schools that consistently deliver a high quality service. Only schools that have obtained excellent reviews from our students throughout the year receive this recognition.

In October, we analyse the results of the previous year’s satisfaction surveys and assign the excellence certificates for the following year. The Excellence Certificate’s logo appears on the profile of each awarded school.

Who is eligible for an ESL Certificate of Excellence?
Any of 400+ ESL partner schools around the world are eligible for a certificate, if they meet the criteria.

What are the criteria?
The ESL Certificate of Excellence is awarded to schools based on the feedback provided by our students. At the end of their programmes, students rate many aspects of their stay, including school facilities, teaching, quality, accommodation services and leisure programmes.

To receive the ESL Certificate of Excellence, schools must:
  • achieve a minimum of 4 out of 5 global rating
  • receive a minimum of 20 reviews during the year

Does ESL team appraisal have an influence on certificates of Excellence?
No, only student feedback received in the last 12 months count towards the certificate. Schools that achieve average feedback of 4 and above are eligible for the ESL Certificate of Excellence.
