More about language travel in Cuba
Don’t be surprised when those eclectic Cuban clichés turn out to be real: “yank tanks” rolling along the streets (many with wheezing Soviet engines), an unhealthy devotion to baseball, old dudes playing dominoes surrounded by the reassuring haze of cigar smoke, hot people dancing hot dances to a sultry mix of Caribbean and Latin American rhythms. Years of American embargoes have left Cuba a very different destination to the neighbouring Caribbean islands, without the brash tourist resorts or sheen. Cuba is unique. Cuba is real.
Outside of Havana, explore the lush plantations and green forests that gave birth to the revolution. Or just lie on the glistening, undisturbed white sand of the beaches and relax under the Caribbean sunshine... although Cuba has spent much of the past hundred years as a cause célèbre for left-wing students or a getaway for American gangsters, it is, first and foremost, one of the most glorious Caribbean islands.
