In a place that was once the meeting point between the Nahua and Muisca people, Christopher Columbus’ arrival in 1502 changed everything, but maybe not quite as much as elsewhere on the continent. The Conquistadors didn’t think much of Costa Rica. One general, in 1719, called it “the poorest and most miserable Spanish colony in all Americas” and, as such, the country was left in relative peace. Maybe this is why modern Costa Rica is so glorious and peaceful. Or maybe it’s because, on December 1, 1948, while generals elsewhere in Latin America were planning coups, President José Figueres Ferrer abolished the country’s military and invested the budget in security, education and culture.
