Life is good in Barbados, where Caribbean meets Atlantic, sun meets sand and rum meets lime. You will soon be drawn into the laidback lifestyle, where the life’s pleasures are taken seriously. Perhaps this approach to life is a result of the astounding natural surroundings of the island, where rolling tropical hills, sublime beaches and coral reefs are par for the course. The east coast is superb for surfing, the diving conditions around the island are world class and, best of all, Bajans are a welcoming bunch.
More about language travel in Barbados
It is the coast that brings visitors from around the world to visit, but there is much more to Barbados than superb beaches and warm water. The interior of the country is carpeted with exotic flowers, plants and trees, not to mention the vast sugar plantations that hint to Barbados’s long history as a British colony (you still drive on the left here). The rum that these plantations produce flows through the island and in particular the little rum shops, where Bajans meet to catch up on and discuss local news. They are a great place to meet locals. Alternatively, get out and about at night and enjoy the great nightclubs where you can still hear echoes of the calypso for which the island was once famous.
